Installing Linux: Options and Considerations

Installing Linux: Options and Considerations

Before you install Linux, let's look at your options.

Option 1: Virtual Machine (Recommended for Beginners)

A virtual machine (VM) lets you run Linux inside your current operating system, without changing anything on your real computer.

  • Safe: you cannot break your main computer.
  • Easy to remove later.
  • Popular VM software: VirtualBox (free), VMware.

Option 2: Dual Boot

This means installing Linux next to your current OS (like Windows). When you turn on your computer, you choose which OS to use.

  • Uses your real hardware, so it feels faster.
  • More risk: you are changing your computer's disk setup.

Option 3: Live USB

You can run Linux from a USB stick without installing it at all.

  • Great for trying Linux quickly.
  • Changes are not saved after you restart.

Option 4: Full Install

You replace your current OS completely with Linux.

  • Best performance.
  • Not recommended for your very first try.
